Do Good: Peter Gabriel Teams With Oxfam America

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

We love Oxfam America and the great work that they do.  Today, marks the world premiere of a new collaboration for them with Peter Gabriel.

According to Bob Ferguson, Oxfam America’s music artist relations coordinator, “Oxfam America has built some fantastic partnerships and alliances with other organizations that also use music as a tool of social change. One of those organizations is The Voice Project.

The Voice Project is a song-driven movement inspired by the women of Uganda who are using their voices as vehicles for change in the war-ravaged region of Northern Uganda, Southern Sudan, and Eastern Congo, an area that has been marred by violence for the last 24 years. The Voice Project is an attempt to support these incredible women and the peace movement in the region, and an effort to see how far a voice can carry.

Today, Oxfam is proud to join The Voice Project partners Invisible Children, Resolve Uganda, Witness, and HOPE Campaign, in premiering the new video of Peter Gabriel covering Tom Waits’ classic song, “In The Neighborhood.””

Read more about the project on Bob’s blog here and enjoy the video below.

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Former Supermodel and current spouse of Jack White Karen Elson, has been quietly working on her music for awhile now.  Although her new single, “The Ghost that Walks” has his fingerprints all over it, her voice is haunting and well suited to the material.  The full album will be out this summer.  The single is available as a free download over on her website KarenElson.com.  Take a listen for yourself and see what you think below.

Go See: “An Education” Opening Tomorrow

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

education

An Education, the new film from writer Nick Hornby (About A Boy, High Fidelity) and directed by Lone Scherfig is chock-full of surprises.

On the surface, it sounds like another trite “young girl seduced by an older man” movie, but what unfolds is a fully realized film about one woman’s past experiences, realized with equal parts humor and drama.

Based on a memoir by Lynn Barber, the film is set in a post-war, pre-Beatles London suburb, and tells the story of a bright British schoolgirl who is torn between studying for a place at Oxford and the more exciting alternative offered to her by a charismatic older man.  What surprises here, is the reality that the performances are grounded in.  Jenny (perfectly played by Carey Mulligan) is the sort of girl that while smart for her age, is still naïve about the world around her and how actions that seemed appropriate and harmless as a girl, can have serious repercussions when chosen in an adult world.

David (played by Peter Sarsgaard) is her suitor.   His ability to seduce Jenny is even more believable, given the subtlety and nuance of Sarsgaard’s performance.  He shows Jenny his world as though he is seeing it himself for the first time, and it’s that enthusiasm and sharing of wonder and discovery that appeals to and draws Jenny in.

All of the supporting performances are excellent, especially Alfred Molina, who plays Jenny’s father, a perfectly rational man who also gets seduced by David.   Other standouts in the cast include Rosamund Pike (Sense and Sensibility), Emma Thompson, Olivia Williams and Dominic Cooper.

You wouldn’t expect any less but perfect music choices in a Nick Hornby film, and here those songs actually add to the context of the film.  They aren’t just used because they’re great songs, but rather they enhance characters and give insight into the story.

An Education opens tomorrow in New York and Los Angeles.  Check the website for future release dates near you.  Get the soundtrack here.  Enjoy the trailer below.

Heartwarming Hip: Country Star Rodney Atkins Receives Special Honor

Monday, August 24th, 2009

rodney atkins

It warms your heart to hear stories about people who had a rough start in life, but went on to achieve great things and remembered to give back to those who helped them along the way.

To those who don’t know, country star Rodney Atkins started live as “Jimmy Holston” at Holston Home.  He was later adopted and was re-named Rodney Atkins.

Atkins returned to his first home in Greenville, Tennessee this week to help celebrate their newly renovated campus. He spent part of the day performing a special acoustic concert, signing autographs and getting to know the children one on one.  Atkins also participated in the official ribbon cutting ceremony in which the “Rodney Atkins Youth Home” was named and dedicated.

“This is absolutely one of the greatest things of my life,” says Atkins. “This isn’t a career achievement. This is a life achievement. Just to have the opportunity to try and positively affect those kids’ lives is wonderful.  I am so thankful for the folks at Holston Home and their hard work.  They absolutely are some of the greatest people alive.  It’s really hard to express how grateful I am to be a part of Holston’s mission.”

Vintage Mariah Makes It Happen

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Seeing Mariah at the Michael Jackson memorial service yesterday made us nostalgic for Mariah’s classic MTV “Unplugged” show.  Travel back with us to the land of kinky hair Mariah, rollicking piano from the guy in C&C Music Factory and a jacket and pants combo that has Bryan Adams written all over it.
