Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

The art-world duo known for pioneering the world of online video content. now have their first television show on HBO.. The brothers primarily use cameras that we all might have and, go about shooting the world around them. They’re way kinder and gentler Michael Moore’s, if you will.

Casey and Van Neistat have produced over two hundred short films, most notably iPod’s Dirty Secret, focusing on Apple’s policy on replacing iPod batteries, and Bike Thief, chronicling the ease with which they steal their own bicycle.   Casey also produced Daddy Longlegs, which we talked about here.

The show is a  mix of biographical vignettes and experiments in curiosity,  The Neistat Brothers includes such segments as:  a nautical challenge of varying proportions; smuggling authentic maple syrup into Amsterdam; a disappointing and revelatory trip to Mexico; studio renovations; and the search for Van’s biological father.

And the founder of Nantucket Nectars, Tom Scott is the executive producer.

Look for The Neistat Brothers on Fridays, at 12 Midnight, on HBO.  Visit the official website here and enjoy the preview of the show below.

Movie: “Gasland” Documentary On HBO Monday

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Having witnessed the recent coal mining disaster in Kentucky and what is currently happening with the oil spill in the Gulf, it makes you curious about the other types of energy we’re currently using and are the methods that are being used to make or extract them safe.

A new documentary called Gasland seeks to answer the questions about a little-known drilling process called “fracking”. First-time documentary director Josh Fox received a letter to drill on his land, and he began to investigate this process that is part of natural gas drilling.  With humor and a genuine sense of curiosity, he realizes there are urgent questions that need to be answered about this little known process and how the industry itself has found a way to be exempt from practically all environmental laws and regulations.   Could there be another industry claiming to be “clean energy”, but really all about profit?

Gasland debuts on HBO, Monday at 9pm.  Check out the official website here.  Take a look trailer below.

“My mother gave me a completely priceless life.”
– “Little Edie” Beale, 1917-2002

In 1973, filmmakers Albert and David Maysles entered the strange world of “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale, two charming eccentrics who were relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Spending six weeks with the reclusive mother and daughter who chose to live in squalor and almost total isolation in a decaying, 28-room mansion in East Hampton, the Maysles captured their day-to-day life in its raw, uncensored, captivatingly honest moments for a documentary entitled “Grey Gardens.” Little did anyone know that the 100-minute documentary would catapult the two women from virtual obscurity to cult status as their legacy grew in depth and stature over the years.

Drew Barrymore stars as “Little Edie” and Jessica Lange stars as “Big Edie” in GREY GARDENS. This film takes us back to the early years of the mother-daughter duo, as well as chronicling the making of the iconic documentary by the Maysles brothers, their riches to rags story and their unique mother and daughter bond.

Malcolm Gets, Daniel Baldwin, Ken Howard and Jeanne Tripplehorn co-star in the film.

Enjoy the trailer below. Click here for more details on the movie.
