Extra Hip: “Animal Kingdom” On The Radar

Friday, June 18th, 2010

We don’t know what rock we’ve been sleeping under, but thankfully, we found out about the Aussie film Animal Kingdom, before it passed us by.  Early reviews have been fantastic and especially glowing for Australian acting legend Jacki Weaver.

Here’s the scoop:   The Cody family led by matriarch, Smurf (Jacki Werner), bring her innocent grandson, J into the family business—–armed robbery. But tensions are on the brink of exploding between the family, felons and renegade cops.

Ben Mendelsohn plays Pope, the oldest brother of the Cody clan, who tries unsuccessfully to come to terms with the fact that his partner and best friend, Barry ‘Baz’ Brown (Joel Edgerton), wants out of the game. Craig (Sullivan Stapleton), the middle brother with a hair trigger, deals and does cocaine while the youngest brother Darren (Luke Ford) fights with his conscience as he participates in the family business. All of them are adored, sustained and supported by Smurf, who seems to be pulling the strings.

Guy Pearce plays senior police officer Nathan Leckie, who, recognizing that J’s youth and inexperience might well prove to be the key to finally conquering the Codys, tries to lure him into the fold after the death of a close associate. In order to survive, J must determine how the game is played and choose his place in this cunning and brutal animal kingdom.

Movie: “Gasland” Documentary On HBO Monday

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Having witnessed the recent coal mining disaster in Kentucky and what is currently happening with the oil spill in the Gulf, it makes you curious about the other types of energy we’re currently using and are the methods that are being used to make or extract them safe.

A new documentary called Gasland seeks to answer the questions about a little-known drilling process called “fracking”. First-time documentary director Josh Fox received a letter to drill on his land, and he began to investigate this process that is part of natural gas drilling.  With humor and a genuine sense of curiosity, he realizes there are urgent questions that need to be answered about this little known process and how the industry itself has found a way to be exempt from practically all environmental laws and regulations.   Could there be another industry claiming to be “clean energy”, but really all about profit?

Gasland debuts on HBO, Monday at 9pm.  Check out the official website here.  Take a look trailer below.

Movies: “Mother and Child” Is A Must See This Friday

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

We can’t stop telling our friends and random strangers how much we loved this film.  And, while we”ll be buying a ticket to “Iron Man 2″ , we know for sure, our money would be best spent on Mother and Child.

Sadly, some will think it’s just a chick flick or a bigger budgeted Lifetime film, but it’s so much more.  Brilliant writing and acting make this film Oscar-worthy, and able to make grown men cry.  Annette Bening is the emotionally wounded title character, Karen, who gave her baby up for adoption at 14.  Naomi Watts is Elizabeth, the daughter that Karen gave up.  She is now a high-powered attorney who’s molded herself into a master manipulator.  And finally, Kerry Washington plays Lucy, a lovely young married woman unable to have children and looking to adopt .  Writer/director Rodrigo García (Nine Lives) deftly interweaves the heartwrenching decisions all these women make while finding a way to stay above melodrama.

And, while the men in this film play second fiddle, they are more than just supporting roles in the hands of Samuel L. Jackson and Jimmy Smits (Someone please put Jimmy Smits in more films!).  The film just wouldn’t be the same with out either of them.

Mother and Child opens in Los Angeles and New York Friday May 7th.  Check out our coverage of the NYC premiere, including interviews with the stars and producer Lisa Marie Falcone, here.
